BEAR HUNT

These kids are ready to MOVE! Today the class learned the locomotor steps across the floor. Before I could even challenge them with new ways to move (ie. crawling backwards, walking sideways, turning, skipping), they were already doing it! I loved seeing their energy and creativity in moving their bodies. I did ask them to reign in theircreativity for a little bit so we were all on the same page and actually executing the step that I showed them. However, once we talked about the fundamentals of the step they were able to add on to it. During this across the floor I was also playing music so they would have the opportunity to work on their musicality. I hoped that they would naturally move in beat to the music. Some students were able to do this, and others weren’t quite getting it, but my focus was on starting the groups across the floor on time with the music. Using music at this time served to not only introduce musicality, but to also space the students so that crashing of second graders would be mitigated. For the last part of our lesson we utilized the knowledge we had just gained and went on an adventure together; walking through the tall grass, leaping over the river, sliding through the trees, jumping on the rocks, galloping through the field, and crawling into the cave. It didn’t even surprise them when we realized there was a bear in the cave! We then quickly reversed the whole process and barely escaped the hungry bear! We obviously had to do this again and this time I quizzed the students to see if they could remember the sequence.  This served as a fun activity to help them begin using their minds to sequence movement with their bodies. It was so much fun teaching a class that loves moving their bodies and using their creativity!

  1. So FUN!!! I loved your creativity when teaching something so simple as locomotor steps! Sometimes it's hard to be creative with something so straight forward but I loved that you added challenges/ variations (walking sideways, crawling backwards, ect) and LOVED the adventure you took them on and then challenging them to reverse the order due to a bear!! Literally so creative! You're lessons sound like a blast!
